The front-line leader sits between management and the team, answerable to both and fully belonging to neither. Understanding that position is what stops it feeling like personal failure.
Both directions expect loyalty
Management expects targets delivered; the team expects you to defend them. When those conflict you cannot fully satisfy either, and pretending you can is what destroys credibility with both.
You translate in both directions
Explaining management decisions in terms the team can act on, and escalating team realities in terms management can use. Doing neither leaves both sides with a false picture and you carrying the gap.
Being straight beats being liked
Teams forgive a supervisor who is demanding and consistent. They do not forgive one who says different things to different people, and that is the fastest way to lose a floor.
Action step
Write the last decision you passed down and whether you explained the reasoning or just the instruction.
