Development plans built on a flattering view of current capability aim at the wrong things. The uncomfortable audit is the useful one.
Separate what you do from what you do well
Listing your responsibilities is not an assessment. For each one, ask what evidence exists that you do it well, and where the evidence is thin or absent.
Ask people who will tell you
Self-assessment has a known ceiling. Two or three colleagues who will be straight with you, asked specifically what you should work on, will produce more in ten minutes than a week of reflection.
Look at what you avoid
The tasks you consistently postpone or hand off usually mark either a capability gap or a confidence gap. Both are worth naming; they are frequently the highest-value development targets.
Action step
List what you avoid at work and write, for each, whether it is capability, confidence or genuine lack of time.
