Analysts often assume that correct numbers speak for themselves. They rarely do. Decisions are made by people, and people respond to meaning, relevance, and narrative far more readily than to raw accuracy. Data storytelling is the craft of carrying sound analysis across that human gap.

Accuracy Is Necessary but Not Sufficient

A flawed analysis deserves to fail, so rigour remains the foundation. But a rigorous analysis presented as an undifferentiated wall of figures also fails, just more quietly: it gets politely received and then ignored. Persuasion begins where accuracy ends, with choices about emphasis, framing, and sequence.

Meaning Beats Magnitude

Numbers persuade when the audience can feel their consequences. Saying churn rose two points lands weakly; saying we lost the equivalent of our entire March cohort lands hard, while describing the same reality. Translating figures into stakes the audience already cares about is the storyteller’s central move.

Trust Is the Medium

Every data story spends or earns trust. Overstated claims, hidden caveats, and decorative precision spend it; acknowledged limitations and consistent honesty earn it. Because you will present to the same people repeatedly, the long game matters more than winning any single meeting.

Action Step: Take one finding you have presented recently and rewrite its headline twice: once translating the number into a consequence the audience cares about, and once adding an honest caveat. Notice how the combination feels more credible, not less.
